Interpreting predictions + residuals

Interpreting Predictions and Residuals in the Social Sciences

The farther an observation is from the expected value, the worse our model is at predicting Y given X, for that particular observation. In the social sciences, the predicted value is often far off the observed value.

So what does that say about the importance or emphasis on predictions?

You should be prepared to substantively reflect upon predicted values and how they relate to the observed values. That substantive understanding is required to make sense of the findings fully.
